This work was created during artist residencies in City Council Districts 11 and 12, funded by the Artist-In-Residence Grants Program of the City of Los Angeles' Cultural Affairs Department. At Monroe High School in Northridge, Council District 12, I taught a class in pinhole cameras and portrait photography for residents of the Tarzana Treatment Centers Transitional Housing Program. At Venice High School in Council District 11, I worked with participants from The Wellness Community- West Los Angeles, the founding chapter of a national organization that provides support to cancer patients and their families. Together, the participants built pinhole cameras that they used to create images, including self-portraits and portraits of significant people in their lives. The project gave the participants an opportunity to alter their normal relationship with self-image.
