Chris Adams in Front of the Lighthouse at Lewes, Delaware, July 2001

For the collaborative portraits, I asked the subjects to choose a favorite contemplative place that had significance in relation to their illness and treatment. I then created my own pinhole camera in a tent to make the oversized images. For her 'contemplative' portrait, Chris wanted to be photographed in front of the famous lighthouse at Lewes, Delaware. She started collecting images of lighthouses when she was a child, ever since her father gave her a postcard of this one near the summer house he was building for the family at the time. Years later while taking a class in meditation at The Wellness Community, the students were asked to choose a mental image of healing to focus on while meditating. Chris saw the lighthouse as a beacon of hope, and concentrated on it during meditation to help speed her recovery.
