Chris Adams. Self Portrait, Summer 2001
pinhole silver print, 8 x 10 inches

This project draws on Roland Barthes' writing about photography, time and memory. In Camera Lucida, Barthes writes, "A sort of umbilical cord links the body of the photographed (person) to my gaze: light, though impalpable, is here a carnal medium, a skin I share with anyone who has been photographed." My motivations for working with this community are directly related to the loss of two close friends, one to cancer and another to HIV/AIDS.
