Denise DeOrio at Longwood Gardens, July 2001
transparency film, (4) x-ray illuminators, 41 x 67 inches

For many years, I have enjoyed the bounty of Longwood Gardens and as a season pass holder I attended the gardens though all seasons, but not until I became a cancer patient did I really get the most of the experience. I had spent many tranquil moments in the gardens losing myself in the colors and scents of the flowers, the bird and frog calls, feeding the cat fish with my young nephew, and just being calm, but I never knew the totality of the experience until I was undergoing treaments for breast cancer. I walked the paths and was able to forget what I was going through for an hour, so when Brian asked me where I would choose to have my portrait done, I didn't hesitate to say Longwood.
