1993, collaged silver prints, color xeroxes, text on mylar, construction paper, 50" x 92"
In this series of images with text, the snapshot aesthetic used in the J. Crew clothing catalogue is called into question by combination with personal photos and stories. The piece uses the casual photographic style of the J. Crew images and pushes it towards its untenable conclusion by juxtaposing it with personal photographs. In the first row, male figures were cut out of the ads and the artist's body was inserted in their place, but the strategy of replacement is obvious and comical. This is in stark contrast with the text, which describes the painful memories associated with the photos on the bottom row. The second row refers to the process of cutting one's own pictures. Through this process, the powerful relationship between personal photography and memory is revealed.
