Untitled (Los Angeles) & (California), 1996 - ongoing
borderless C-prints on FujiFlex, acrylic; 24 inches square

These photographs show Los Angeles and California as seen from a moving vehicle. This series explores the space of landscape and how various competing groups use it and communicate through it. My images are concerned with the impact of culture on the landscape in all it's forms: urban, suburban, rural and wilderness. Subjects include the use of text and gardens in the landscape, the image of 'nature' and unused land. The reference to moving and being in a car is important to me because this is often the way I experience the exterior world in California. Whether driving or stopping to shoot, I draw my inspiration from being in the car and moving through space. The blur is not just photographic, but is also similar to how I see. And by simultaneously showing still and moving shots, that timeless reverie that most photographs encourage is interrupted. These two different kinds of stilled moments rub against each other, allowing neither to be comfortable.
